JERZY MAKSYMIUK
one of the most eminent Polish conductors and an extraordinary artistic
personality. He studied piano - playing under Jerzy Lefeld, composition
with Piotr Perkowski and conducting with Bogus³aw Madey at the State
Higher School of Music in Warsaw. Prize-winner at the Grzegorz
Fitelberg and the Artur Malawski competitions for composers and the
I.J.Paderewski piano competitions.
In 1972, he founded Polish Chamber Orchestra. In 1975, he became the
first WOSPR conductor, and with this group he toured all over the
Europe, as well as visited the US twice. He recorded with WOSPR a lot;
the album Szymanowski's Violin concertos with the participation of
Konstanty A. Kulka was awarded "Diapason d'Or" prize.
But it was the
debut of Polish Chamber Orchestra in England that brought him success.
It resulted in signing the contract with record producers EMI, and
numerous proposals to perform at renowned European festivals. He
recorded several albums with the orchestra, performing the music from
baroque (including Four seasons with Krzysztof Jakowicz), through
Haydn, Mozart, Rossini, Mendelssohn, Grieg and Czajkowski, to
contemporary music as well. The orchestra and its maestro were
numerously awarded prestigious prizes, including critics' prize
"Orfeusz" at 'Warsaw Autumn' Festival and "Wiener Flötenuhr" for
recording Mozart piano concertos, they were awarded both prizes twice. |

In 1983, Jerzy Maksymiuk became the conductor of BBC Scottish Symphony
Orchestra. Touring Europe with the orchestra, he also recorded four
albums in the cycle "Romantic Piano Concerto" for Hyperion company, the
second album was prized by the 'Gramophone' magazine as the best 1992
album. A year later, Jerzy Maksymiuk and BBC Scottish Orchestra won the
same price for recorded works of contemporary Scottish composer James
Mac Millan. As a tribute to his ten-year-long work with the orchestra
he was given the title Conductor Laureate and in 1990 the honorary
degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred on him by the Strathclyde
University in Glasgow. In this same year he began the co-operation with
English National Opera.
Furthermore, the artist performs as a guest with such renowned
orchestras as London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic,
Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Tokyo
Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Israeli Chamber Orchestra, and Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra. At the same time he consistently co-operates
with Polish groups, mainly with Sinfonia Varsovia, whose core members
belong to the Polish Chamber Orchestra as well. In the 2000 together
with Sinfonia Varsovia and Piotr Paleczny he recorded for BeArTon the
album of Chopin Piano Concertos based on the National Edition , which
won price of the Golden Disc. Next year with the same performers he
recorded for BeArTon the album The Best of Paderewski which won
nomination of Fryderyk 2001award. In 2002 he received nomination of
Fryderyk 2002 award in The Greatest Polish Music Record category for
the album of Wojciech Kilar`s works included.
