About the album Chopin's Preludes and Barcarolle, performed by Stanislav Bunin
"This is the beginning of a series featuring Chopin's works in interpretations by great foreign pianists, issued in the according to the National Chopin Edition. Listening to Bunin, one may gain the impression that he makes a conscious effort to highlight the mature character of the pieces. The dramatic Preludes - in E major, G sharp minor and G minor - are played in a noble and dignified manner. In the last Prelude, in D minor, he develops the melody in a way that brooks no argument, referring to the similarly articulated cantilena of the A minor Prelude, thus giving the whole cycle an epic sweep. The A minor Prelude is also played beautifully. In the masterful interpretation of the A major Prelude, the piece's succinct beauty can be appreciated only after the last note has sounded out. I would place Bunin's reading of the Prelude in C sharp minor Op. 45 half-way between the romantic playing of Martha Argerich and the mysticism that is brought out in this work by Garrick Ohlsson. The narration is smooth and at the same time very meditative and interesting. In the Barcarolle I was greatly impressed by the coda. An interesting start to a new series..."
