What the critics say about us:
PRZEKRÓJ weekly, No 31, 3 August 2003
On the 2-CD set of works by Henryk Mikołaj
Górecki
"[In Beatus vir] Maksymiuk has given us a fully convincing artistic product, which I would call 'velvet-like'. He employs vast dynamic planes, stopping short of an excessive dramatisation of the piece which in its very matter contains great expressive power. Maksymiuk does not use unnecessary 'small climaxes', performing the work instead as a great emotional arch and a prayer that is both fervent and full of internal peace.
Krzysztof Droba once compared the choral Amen to a Gothic cathedral. However, whereas a pointed arch is a feature of Gothic style, in the interpretation of the joint choirs of the Polish Radio of Kraków and the Schola Cantorum Gedanensis the entries of successive phrases are more 'rounded' than in other renditions of the piece.

This is a thighly interesting interpretative
concept. The sound of the choral forces is very beautiful; it is particularly enchanting in the quiet
sections. hree Pieces in Old Style is not, as one could expect, a reissue of Maksymiuk's earlier recording with the Polish Chamber
Orchestra. Extraordinary precision, finely drawn architecture and fragments reminiscent of village band style - all these features demonstrate the richness of this wonderful
music.
Górecki labelled his Concerto-Cantata 'strange music', yet his Little Requiem for a Polka is even more
strange. It begins with the droplets of sound on the piano and
bells. Then come the violins, as if from Kantor's The Dead Class. Sinister
brass, a maddening dance, the fading piano, the clarinet, the chorale of the strings and
horn, and finally something like a return to the beginning. Listening to this interpretation sent shivers up my
spine. It is not longer an interpretation but pure metaphysics!
André Malraux said about the 21st century that it would either be the century of spirit or it would not exist at
all. If our century is going to have as its champions such visionaries as Jerzy Maksymiuk and his collaborating
musicians, we should not worry about the future.
